Cemetery Commission charts new policies on plots and heirship

Cemetery Commission · Meeting of July 22, 2026

Upton Cemetery Commission outlines policies on plot ownership and maintenance. Chair Edward W. Phillips and member Lisa Morton, with Kathleen Bern and Tim Rick, reviewed the deed process and will survey neighboring towns to develop a heirship policy.

The commission discussed Massachusetts General Law allowing resale of plots unused for 75 years and will formalize eligibility standards for purchasers. The commission will enforce policies on plantings, flags, and structures, scheduling a July 31 survey of Lakeview Cemetery to assess nonconforming sites before the town issues compliance notices.
